South Bay Neighborhood on Alert After Rash of Holiday Break-Ins

A South Bay neighborhood has been hit hard by a rash of break-ins in the past two weeks.

Warnings have been posted throughout the Cory neighborhood near Westfield Valley Fiar Mall in Santa Clara in response to the spike in crime. Many residents have installed high-tech surveillance and alarm systems. In addition, residents are also doing their own neighborhood patrols.

Residents Jan and Mike Elder said their next door community message board has reported at least nine burglaries in the neighborhood. The Elders hope their dog will be a deterrent, but also plan to beef up security with surveillance cameras.

"It would be that kind of a hidden camera that lets you know when someone walks up to their house," Mike Elder said.

In many cases, the break-ins occur during the day, with suspects getting in through windows. There has also been an increase in package thefts in the area.

The neighborhood watch group is now on alert, hoping the warnings will make a difference.

"Nobody likes it, but you just got to watch out for each other," resident Eric Hernandez said.
