Students Displaced by Tubbs Fire Return to Elementary School

First responders to the October wildfires in Sonoma County will escort displaced students of the John B. Riebli Elementary School back to their campus today.

The K-6 school at 315 Mark West Springs Road in Santa Rosa survived the Oct. 8 Tubbs fire but closed for cleanup of toxic materials. The displaced students have been attending the San Miguel School at 5350 Faught Road or the Mark West Elementary School at 4600 Lavell Road in the meanwhile.

California Highway Patrol Officer Jon Sloat said school buses will pick up the Riebli students at San Miguel School around 11:30 a.m., then drive to the Mark West School and arrive at the John B. Riebli school around 12:15 p.m.

The Windsor and Rincon Valley fire protection districts are participating in the event, Windsor Fire Protection District investigator Cyndi Foreman said.

Fire trucks and pickup trucks will lead the procession from the schools to John B. Riebli Elementary School, Foreman said. The school will close after today for the winter break.

The school in the Mark West Union District served more than 500 students at the time of the wildfires in Sonoma County, according to its website.
