Suicidal Man Jumps into Traffic, Closes 101

The 24-year-old Sausalito man was riding in a car with his mother and sister when he started making suicidal statements, police said.

Northbound U.S. Highway 101 south of Petaluma was briefly closed this morning when a Sausalito man got out of his mother's car and jumped in front of traffic, the California Highway Patrol said.

The CHP got a call around 10:50 a.m. about a pedestrian jumping in  front of traffic at San Antonio Road, CHP Officer Jon Sloat said.

The 24-year-old man was riding in a car with his mother and sister when he started making suicidal statements, Sloat said. The man's mother stopped the car and called the CHP.

The mother told the CHP said her son was possibly armed with a knife and was hostile to law enforcement, Sloat said.

The CHP arrived in five minutes, Sloat said. Officers stopped all northbound traffic and tried to contact the distraught man, Sloat said.

A passing motorist who thought the man was hitchhiking pulled over and the man got in the front passenger seat, Sloat said.

CHP Officer Tim Randall contacted the man through the open car window, Sloat said. The man was severely drug impaired and would not exit the vehicle, Sloat said.

After a few minutes the man was removed from the car and it was determined he was not armed, and the highway was reopened, Sloat said.

The Sausalito man was booked into the Sonoma County jail for resisting officers and being under the influence of a controlled substance, Sloat said.
