Summer Solstice Celebrations to Kick Off the Season

June 21 marks the official start of summer.

Wednesday marks the official start of summer. This transition from spring has always been celebrated. Popularly known as the Summer Solstice, people gather all over the world to welcome new beginnings. Whether you believe in the power of this seasonal shift or just want to start the summer with fun, here is a list of the best Solstice happenings in the Bay Area.

Surrealistic Summer Solstice

The Conservatory of Flowers on Wednesday will bring summer in on a wave of color. The San Francisco landmark is opening the night with sounds from legendary musicians of the 60s. Some performers will include members of Jefferson Airplane, ALO, Motherhips, and The Chambers Brothers. In addition, a technicolor light display created by Ben Davis of Illuminate will project onto the conservatory. With the event also commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love, attendees will be celebrating the season in true hippie fashion.

Fire Ceremony Meditation and Yoga

Just like with the New Year, summer solstice is used to mark new beginnings. If looking to reboot your year, join the Yoga Society of San Francisco at Golden Gate Park for a night of self-care. Starting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, yogis will take part in a deep relaxation session. Both a fire meditation ceremony and dinner will follow.

Free Movie on the Beach

A tradition that has spanned across generations, students are once again beginning to mark their three months of freedom with beach trips and late night movies. Kids of any age can partake in this celebration at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Wednesday will kick off the pier's free summer movie screenings. Viewers will be treated to the 1987 Santa Cruz based classic, β€œThe Lost Boys.” Audience members can enjoy vampire themed treats as well as take a self-guided tour of the film’s locations.

Easy Bay Solstice Gathering

If unable to join in during the midweek celebrations, Bay Area Reclaiming will be hosting a solstice event on Saturday June 24. The gathering will begin at 11 a.m. at Berkeley's Ohlone Park Redwood Grove. Attendees are encouraged to bring musical instruments and food to enjoy.

Summer Sailstice

Another weekend event taking place is the Summer Sailstice. This all day affair will be held at the Encinal Yacht Club in Alameda. Along with musical performances, the club will host speakers, seminars and boat races.
