An effort to have a memorial built for a San Francisco man killed by police is gaining momentum.
The shooting death of Alex Nieto in 2014 sparked outrage among some in the community, but a federal jury found the officers involved did not use excessive force. Police said they fired when Nieto pointed a Taser that looked like a gun at officers and refused to drop it.
Supporters of the Nieto family disagree with the police department's account.
Now members of the Board of Supervisors will be considering an ordinance requiring a memorial be built in Nieto's honor. Supporters said a tribute to Nieto would help begin a healing process.
"This would be a positive step for our community and all of San Francisco to repair ties," said Benjamin Bac-Sierra, a spokesperson for the Justice for Alex Nieto Coalition.
The Board of Supervisors is expected to consider the memorial at a meeting next month.
