Suspect Sought in Attempted Kidnapping of Woman in San Rafael

Police in San Rafael were searching for a suspect in an attempted kidnapping early Tuesday morning near the Marin County Civic Center, according to the police department.

Just before 1 a.m., a woman reported to police she was the victim of an attempted kidnapping. She told officers a man in a dark colored minivan with tinted windows drove up and grabbed her from behind as she was walking along Civic Center Drive, police said.

The woman had just left work and missed the last bus at the stop in front of the civic center. She began walking back to her workplace when the van drove up, police said. When the man grabbed her and began pulling her toward the van’s open sliding door, the victim fought back, hitting the suspect with her umbrella, police said. The suspect then fled in the van, last seen driving south on Civic Center Drive.

Officers from the San Rafael Police Department and Marin County Sheriff’s Office searched the area but didn't find the van.

The suspect was described as between 20 and 30 years old, about 5 feet, 8 inches tall, with a muscular build. The victim said he smelled of alcohol and body odor.
