Homicide Suspects Fatally Shot By San Jose Police Identified

Officials have identified two men shot and killed by police in San Jose in less than 24 hours Sunday night and Monday evening as well as the officers involved in those shootings.

Matthew Castillo, 29, was shot and killed on Sunday by officers Fonseca and Jeffrey, according to police. Fonseca has been with the department for nine years, and Jeffrey has been with the department for 14 years.

Richard Jacquez, 40, was fatally shot on Monday by Officer Morris, who has been with the department for 15 years, according to police.

Both of those suspects are residents of San Jose.

A third suspect has not yet been identified and remains at large. He's described as a man with a heavy build, from 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall.

The three suspects were linked to the fatal shooting of 38-year-old San Jose resident Christopher Maxwell Wrenn, who officers found wounded in a hallway at an office building in the 1800 block of Lundy Avenue around 1 a.m. Thursday, according to San Jose police Sgt. Enrique Garcia.

Wrenn was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, Garcia said.

Investigators later developed information on the suspects and obtained arrest warrants for Castillo and Jacquez.

The most recent shooting was shortly before 7 p.m. Monday in the area of Kirkhaven Court and Stoneyhaven Way, Garcia said.

The officers were in the area driving behind Jacquez, who sensed he was being followed and attempted to evade them, according to Garcia.

A woman was riding inside Jacquez's car during the chase, and officers had "credible information" that he was going to kill her, according to Garcia.

"There was probably concern about what information this female had about the homicide and the suspect's concern about her divulging that information, putting him at jeopardy of being apprehended," Garcia said.

Jacquez led one of the officers on a vehicle pursuit and crashed at Kirkhaven and Stoneyhaven, Garcia said. Jacquez left the car and fled toward a home. The woman stayed inside the vehicle.

The officer chased after Jacquez and commanded him to stop, but shot him multiple times after he failed to comply, Garcia said.

Jacquez turned around, facing the officer, who fired again and fatally wounded him, according to Garcia.

Jacquez, who was on parole for robbery, did not have any weapons during the shooting, but officers were working under the assumption he was armed and dangerous, the spokesman said.

The other suspect, Castillo, was shot and killed by officers following up on Thursday's homicide at a strip mall in the 3100 block of Senter Road near Capitol Expressway around 10:10 p.m. Sunday, Garcia said.

The officers had attempted to take Castillo into custody, but he did not follow their orders, Garcia said.

Castillo pulled out a handgun prompting two officers to shoot him and he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Garcia.

Photos and video footage from the Lundy Avenue business building's surveillance system showing the three suspects has been released by police.

In the video Castillo had a handgun, but investigators have not determined if it was the same weapon he had at the strip mall, according to Garcia.

Jacquez was seen with a Tec-9 assault weapon, which was later recovered through a search warrant, but Garcia could not provide details on where it was found.

The third suspect, who has not been identified, was armed and wore a mask and dark clothing in the surveillance footage, Garcia said. He's considered armed and dangerous.

The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office and San Jose police internal affairs unit are monitoring the investigations into both shootings, Garcia said.

The officers who shot at the suspects have been placed on paid administrative leave, he said.

San Jose has had eight officer-involved shootings this year, five of which were fatal, police said. Wrenn's killing was the city's nineteenth homicide so far this year.
