Suspected Swine Flu Hits SFPD

Possible H1N1 virus blamed on trip to Mexico

The San Francisco Police Department is at least five officers short this week and they have germs to thank for the absences.

One of the officers at the department went to Mexico last week and apparently brought home an unhealthy souvenir -- swine flu.

A few days after the officer returned to work, he and four fellow officers, who all work the same shift at the Northern Station on Fillmore,  started showing symptoms of the flu. Specifically, the H1N1 strain of the flu.

One of the officers went to the doctor and was tentatively diagnosed with the H1N1 flu virus.

To be safe, the department sent all five officers home and got to work disenfecting the entire department.

Test results have not yet confirmed the illness is the H1N1 flu so the cleanup might just have turned into a real-life drill.
