Israel Lopez, a Richmond High School teacher arrested Monday on suspicion of sex crimes involving a student, was charged Wednesday with eight felonies for conduct that allegedly occurred earlier this year.
Lopez is facing four counts of unlawful sexual intercourse and four more counts of lewd acts upon a child, 15-year-old "Jane Doe," between April 1 and Aug. 24.
Police say the West Contra Costa Unified School District is cooperating with the investigation, and district officials said Tuesday that Lopez has been placed on leave.
He was scheduled to make an initial appearance in a Richmond courtroom Thursday afternoon, but prosecutors said Lopez is not expected to enter a plea until next week.
Meanwhile, he remains in custody on $400,000 bail.
