Texas Abalone Diver Dies in Tomales Bay

SANTA ROSA, Calif. (AP) — A Texas man has become the sixth fatality this year tied to abalone diving off the Northern California coast.

The Press Democrat reports spokesman for the Point Reyes National Seashore, John Dell'Osso, says 67-year-old Gerald McGuire had been swimming toward a dive spot in Tomales Bay when a fellow diver noticed him floating in the water.

Dell'Osso says divers had dragged McGuire to shore and tried to resuscitate him before calling police. Marin County firefighters took over but failed to revive McGuire.

Dell'Osso says the cause of McGuire's death is still being investigated, but that he may have fallen unconscious before he started diving for abalone.

Five others have died this abalone season, including three men who drowned in April after facing rough waters.
