Primus drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander had a recent heart attack and subsequent surgery. Thankfully he is well on his way to a full recovery and is scheduled to hit the road in the Fall for the Primus and the Chocolate Factory tour. A few September Primus shows were canceled, but Les and Ler asked Tool drummer Danny Carey to sit in for two shows in Chicago and one in Denver on Friday, September 19.

So, Danny Carey stepped in to help out on what ended up being three dates, with a special night in Chicago to be the first before two Riot Fest gigs.

Herb wasn't just in everyone's thoughts, he was also there on stage. In a cleaver move by the Primus camp, the ever-present onstage astronauts Neil and Buzz donned the face of the Ginseng Drummer throughout the show. A really nice touch.

Les Claypool, no stranger to collaboration with musicians from different bands (see: Oysterhead, The Holy Mackerel, Frog Brigade, CCBBB, Sausage, etc.), seemed to be having a great time with his new, temporary band.

Danny Carey also seemed to be enjoying himself, albeit a tad cautious at times on this first gig with a new group. The three had only practiced together twice prior to the show.

Ler was awesome, rounding out trio and bringing some levity to the heavy bass and drums coming from the other side of the stage.

The group played a 12-song set (photo of setlist to follow) with a Danny Carey drum solo and a brief tease of Tool's Ænema, a crowd favorite. The group played a one-song encore of Too Many Puppies, and the whole thing stretched out for almost two hours.

Tool opened for Primus on Sunday, December 31, 1995 at the Oakland Arena, and 19 years later the bands played together just last March at the Festival Cumbre Tajin in Veracruz, Mexico.

Primus just announced that they are playing their annual New Year's Eve show at the Fox Theater in Oakland again, as well as some Primus and the Chocolate Factory shows after that in Portland and Seattle.

There are no upcoming Tool shows scheduled, but Danny Carey has a group called VOLTO!, and they are scheduled to play The Mint in LA on Saturday, October 4 at 11:15pm.

That first show with Danny, he was naturally the subject of the setlist doodle, which he smiles at here upon laying eyes on it.

Les then joked around, playing an extended rendition of Tool's "Ænema," only this time he did it Duo de Twang country style, which actually worked quite well. Perhaps we'll be hearing that on the next round of Twang gigs.

Les then joked around playing other fun stuff to the delight of Danny and his wife Rynne Stump before showtime.

"Danny Sucks! Danny Sucks! Danny Sucks!," the crowd chanted, inducting Carey into the decades old "Primus Sucks" tradition.

Danny got a real kick out of the appreciation. One of the few times being told you suck can warm the cockles of your heart.

Danny Carey brought two of these drumheads to sell for $100/each with his art on the top of them. I'm sure they went quickly.
