Tourist Blamed For Highway 1 Head On

A beauty shot lead to a series of events ending in a head on crash in San Mateo County.

An Irish tourist driving on the wrong side of state Highway 1 is believed to have caused a head-on collision on the San Mateo County coast on Saturday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

It was one of two head-on collisions along Highway 1. The other one happened closer to midnight and ended in the death of a 20 year old woman from San Jose. (Read about it here.)

Investigators believe that the 34-year-old man from Dublin, Ireland had pulled over to take pictures on Highway 1 just south of Tunitas Creek Road near San Gregorio at 8:05 p.m., CHP Officer Art Montiel said.

When he re-entered the highway, he was driving north in the southbound lanes, according to the CHP.

The tourist's car collided head-on with a 1988 Acura carrying four people from Pescadero.

The driver of the car, a 43-year-old man, was taken to Stanford University Hospital suffering major injuries.

Three other people in his car, including two children, suffered minor injuries.

The Irish tourist suffered major injuries and was also taken to Stanford University Hospital.

It had not been determined if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
