Reports circulated widely on the Internet Wednesday that Tesla Motors, the high-end electric car maker, will undergo a reorganization that could cause more than 100 workers to lose their jobs.

CNBC's Silicon Valley Bureau Chief Jim Goldman wrote about the shake-up in his daily "Tech Check" blog.

Goldman discusses the irony that the layoffs are being announced just weeks after Tesla announced it would build a giant manufacturing plant in San Jose that could bring 1,000 jobs to the area.

The changes broke into the public sphere earlier this week on the Silicon Valley blog ValleyWag, when Owen Thomas wrote, "In our inbox, rumor of a staggering blow to one of Silicon Valley's new growth industries: Tesla Motors, a tipster tells us, is laying off 100 people, about half of its staff."

CNET reported on the story for the first time on Wednesday and focused mainly on the CEO shake-up that would take place.

The company has made news nationally in the past, and received special notoriety when it was featured on CBS's 60 minutes.
