Cmdr. Ben Horner said the school lockdown has been lifted and parents are free to pick up their children when school ends about 3:15 p.m.
Horner said the victim was taken to a hospital suffering from gunshot wounds. He did not confirm whether the person was a student or not. The Patch reported the victim was a student and that he was in serious condition at a local hospital.
Hormer added that the suspect is a man in his early 20s, standing about 5 feet 2 inches tall with a husky build. He has a light brown beard and was wearing a construction vest, blue jeans and work boots. He was last seen driving a construction-type pickup truck with a rack on it. The truck had blue writing. He was last seen near Alvarado-Niles Boulevard.
The school district issued the following statement late Tuesday:
The Districts primary concerns at this point are first, for the victim and his family, and second, for our students, their families and our staff at James Logan High. We would like to urge folks to keep the victim and his family in their thoughts and prayers.
We also would like to assure everyone connected with the high school that Logan is a safe campus. This incident occurred two blocks away from the school, not at the school itself. Our lockdown procedures today worked as designed, our students behaved in exemplary fashion, and parents who came to the school to pick up their children were patient and respectful.
We also would like to thank the Union City Police Department for their swift and professional response. We will cooperate in any way we can with the investigation.
Class resumed in a normal fashion this afternoon, and will be in session tomorrow. Counseling will be available for students and staff as needed.
