VP Kamala Harris Visits Bay Area for Semiconductor Research and Development

NBC Universal, Inc.

It is time to innovate again.

That was the message from Vice President Kamala Harris as she made a whirlwind visit to the Bay Area on Monday.

The vice president met with tech leaders in Silicon Valley before addressing a big crowd at Applied Materials, a Sunnyvale semiconductor manufacturer.

Harris arrived at Moffett Field in Mountain View before 11 a.m. and was greeted on the tarmac by the mayors of Mountain View, Santa Clara and Sunnyvale.

A brief motorcade ride along Highway 101 led her to the headquarters of Applied Materials, which is where Harris met with Silicon Valley tech leaders in a closed door roundtable discussion.

The heart of the vice president's visit was to outline how the Biden administration said it is helping American tech giants innovate. Harris told the crowd that under the CHIPS Act, the White House has invested $13 billion for semiconductor research and development, and another $39 billion in manufacturing.

The goal is to help create the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators, Harris said.

Applied materials served as an appropriate backdrop. The chip equipment maker on Monday unveiled renderings of its planned semiconductor research and development center in Sunnyvale. When completed, it will be the largest center of its kind in the nation.
