New Water Conservation Target for Benicia 20 Percent

Benicia city officials announced last week that the city's water conservation target has been reduced from 28 percent to 20 percent, according to new requirements released by the State Water Resources Control Board.

The reduction comes after the Water Board refined its implementation of an executive order by Gov. Jerry Brown to reduce water usage statewide by 25 percent.
The city's water conservation target was adjusted after the city submitted revised gallon per person calculations that more accurately reflected water use in 2014 and complied with the Water Board's reporting requirements.

In April and May of this year, residents reduced water use by 36 percent and 43 percent compared to the same months in 2013.

"Benicians deserve to be congratulated for their hard work," City Manager Brad Kilger said in a statement. "Not only are residents exceeding state-mandated target, our conservation rate in April was among the highest in the state."

As temperatures are expected to rise during the summer months, Benicia water quality technician David Wenslawski said in a statement that it will be important to keep on saving water.

"It will be tempting to ramp up sprinklers with higher temperatures. But limiting outdoor water use is where we will continue to achieve the greatest water savings," Wenslawski said.
