Welfare Check Leads to Discovery Of Marijuana Garden, Arrest

A 43-year old Bay Point man was arrested after he let sheriff's deputies -- called in for a welfare check -- into his home where he was growing marijuana, according to reports.

Phong Nguyen "invited deputies into his home" after they arrived there at 8 a.m. Sunday to "check on his welfare," according to the Contra Costa Times.

At the home in the 400 block of Shore Road, deputies found 300 marijuana plants and rock cocaine, the Times reports. They also found that Nguyen had bypassed the electrical meter, meaning he was stealing power.

Nguyen is being held in County Jail in Martinez lieu of $40,000 bail.
