2 Dead After Fatal Crashes on Interstate 80 in San Pablo

Two people were killed in two separate crashes along westbound Interstate 80 in San Pablo Monday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Both collisions shut down all lanes of westbound traffic for multiple hours, and authorities are investigating the second crash as a hit-and-run, CHP officials said.

Authorities in San Pablo on Monday had to close westbound Interstate 80 twice in a matter of hours to investigate two fatal crashes.

The second wreck, which involved a motorcycle and a big-rig, was first reported at 6:22 a.m. near San Pablo Dam Road, CHP officials said.

The driver of a yellow big-rig with a white trailer made an unsafe lane change and collided with the male motorcycle rider, according to the CHP. The man lost control, was ejected from his motorcycle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The motorcyclist was later identified by the Contra Costa County Coroner's Office as 35-year-old Nicholas Brown of Fairfield.

The big-rig driver stopped on the side of the roadway for a few minutes before driving off, CHP officials said. Officers investigating the crash are asking the public to call 510-450-3821 if they have any information about the big-rig.

At 6:38 a.m., a Sig-alert was issued because all lanes were blocked. Shortly before 8 a.m., the Sig-alert was canceled, and the lanes were reopened.

Roughly four hours before the second crash was cleared, a fatal collision closed all westbound lanes at El Portal Drive, according to the CHP. A female driver, who has been identified as Lindche Tran, 25, of Richmond, lost control of her Honda Accord and slammed into the center median. Tran's car landed in the center lanes facing the wrong way without its lights on. As Tran was stepping out of her car, a Dodge Charger struck the Honda Accord, killing her. Two people inside the Dodge Charger were injured.

At 4:22 a.m., a Sig-alert was issued. Two hours later, the Sig-alert was canceled, and all lanes were reopened, CHP officials said.

It is too early to tell if the crashes were triggered by alcohol or drug impairment.
