This year's Great California ShakeOut comes on a busy day in the Bay Area.
Today, 10/21 at 10:21 a.m., a fictional earthquake will rattle the entire Golden State.
More than 7.2 million people have promised to duck, cover and hold as they take part in the statewide drill. The list includes hundreds of schools, business and regular folks who are watching the Today Show.
It comes four days after the 21st anniversary of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake that rocked the entire Bay Area region. That quake hit during Game No.3 of the World Series between the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland As. Today, those same San Francisco Giants will be playing a game that, if they win, would put them back in the series for the first time in seven years.
Here's what you are supposed to do at 10:21:
"The main point is to not try to move, but to immediately protect yourself as best as possible where you are. Earthquakes occur without any warning and may be so violent that you cannot run or crawl; you therefore will most likely be knocked to the ground where you happen to be. You will never know if the initial jolt will turn out to be start of the big one," say planners.
This is the drill's third year. It started in 2008 but was limited to Southern California. The event went statewide last and is now an annual tradition scheduled for the third Thursday of October each year.
