2 Prowlers Arrested For Early Morning Burglary Attempt in San Mateo: Police

San Mateo police lifted a shelter-in-place order Wednesday morning upon arresting a man and woman after a burglary attempt was reported.

Just before 8 a.m.,  police announced the arrest of the second suspect who they said is Saliq Calloway, 22, of San Bruno.

Sgt. Rick Decker said that about 2:45 a.m. there was a report of at least "one prowler with a flashlight" — later found to be Calloway — who was trying to break into a home on the 3100 block of Greenoak Court.

The homeowner called 911, telling officers that a prowler had broken into a side gate and was forcing entry into the home. The entire family had been sleeping at the time.

Victim Lauren O'Neill recalled feeling "just a little terrified and wondering what exactly was going on."

When officers arrived on scene, they found a female suspect — identified as Maria King — trying to break into an SUV, which belongs to O'Neill, a couple blocks away. The 31-year-old San Bruno woman refused to surrender, police said, and instead tried to escape in her own car.

A San Mateo police officer, who was walking the neighborhood on foot, was forced to shoot his firearm at King "in defense of his life" because she tried to run him over at the intersection of West Hillsdale Boulevard and Caxton Court, according to police.

"I woke up to, 'Police! Stop! No, No!' and then four gunshots, tires screeching, and then some screaming," O'Neill said, adding that the neighborhood tends to be "very quiet."

One bullet struck the driver's side of King's car but missed her, police said. Neither the woman nor the officer were injured and King was captured and taken into custody shortly after the shooting. She has been charged for a number of crimes, including burglary, attempted murder, conspiracy and petty theft.

Law enforcement officers set up a perimeter and asked people to stay indoors while they conducted a yard-to-yard search for Calloway. The search lasted nearly five hours and concluded in his peaceful arrest, according to police.

Calloway, who was wanted on two outstanding warrants, also has been charged with burglary and conspiracy.
