A man who allegedly assaulted a woman in a bathroom at San Jose State University's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library on Tuesday night was quickly arrested, a campus spokesperson said Wednesday.
A woman went inside a second-floor bathroom around 9 p.m. when a man already inside tried to restrain her, SJSU spokeswoman Pat Lopes Harris said. The man may have placed his hands around her throat but wasn't armed, Harris said. The woman fought the man off and he ran away. The victim chased after the man, who was quickly apprehended inside by university police officers already guarding the library, Harris said.
The suspect, who hasn't been identified, was arrested and the woman didn't need medical attention, according to Harris.
The library, which is also co-managed by the city, is located at the corner of East San Fernando and South Fourth streets.
The suspect and victim were not affiliated with the city or university, Harris said.
The assault appears to be an isolated incident and students were not notified of what happened since the suspect was immediately arrested, Harris said.
University officials are working on notifying library staff and patrons of the incident and determining if more security is needed at the site, according to Harris.
