Child Dials 911 After Mom Killed in Cupertino

The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office is investigating a suspected homicide that was reported in a quiet Cupertino neighborhood Friday morning, Sgt. Don  Morrissey said.

Sheriff's deputies responded to the 22000 block of Berry Court around 8:50 a.m. where a woman had died and a man was suffering from assault wounds, Morrissey said.

One of the couple's two children dialed 911 for help.  They are now in child protective custody.

Late Friday a suspect was named.  He is Huai Chang Zhao who is 45 years old.  Police think he drove away from the scene in a newer model white Ford 150 truck SGT.

Police said the suspect is a landscaper and the home was in the middle of a landscaping project at the time of the violence.

Neighbors said the family moved into the house a couple months ago.   The entire neighborhood is made of newly built homes.

"They learned very quickly upon their arrival that one of the victims was deceased. The second was transported to a local hospital," Morrissey said.

Police could not confirm the cause of death but it was clear the couple was assaulted in their home.

Police would not answer questions about whether someone was on the loose, saying it was too early in the investigation.

The house is on a cul de sac surrounded by multi-million dollar homes with two mini vans were parked in the driveway.

It is a large two story house that is at least 4,000 square feet.   A large landscaping effort was underway in the front yard.

Evidence technicians set up a tent in the middle of the cul de sac Friday afternoon where they could be seen processing evidence.

Police blocked off at least one block leading to the house.

One neighbor said she was shocked by the news.  She has lived in the area for 30 year and said the biggest thing to happen there was a fender bender involving a teenager.

Officers on the scene said they could not remember the last time they investigated a murder in their city.
