A woman suffered critical smoke inhalation injuries in a fire at a public housing complex in San Francisco's Mission District this morning, a fire department spokesman said.
The one-alarm fire was reported at 7:14 a.m. in a closet at a unit in the Valencia Gardens complex at 390 Valencia St.
The woman was taken to San Francisco General Hospital and was in critical condition this morning, fire spokesman Jonathan Baxter said.
The building's sprinkler system helped contain the fire to the unit where it started, although an adjacent unit sustained water damage, Baxter said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation and so far the only displaced resident is the hospitalized woman, he said.
Valencia Gardens is a 16-building complex run by the Mission Housing Development Corporation, which has a restoration contractor

"Mission Housing is firmly committed to ensuring the welfare of
our tenants in such a circumstance," executive director Sam Moss said in a
statement.
