A Very Capitola Christmas

Mr. Claus'll arrive by water, and that ocean-close ice rink? That's just ahead.

LET'S BE FESTIVELY FRANK HERE: If you were to keep an eye out for Santa Claus, and you happened to be chillaxing on Capitola Main Beach, would you A) expect him to cut through the clouds above, pulled by a team of powerful reindeer? Or B) would you look for Santa to pull up by a vehicle, perhaps an old-school Woodie that's been bedecked in wreaths and holly? Or C) would you keep scanning the surf with the knowledge that Mr. Claus knows La Vida Capitola very well and would honor the town's oceanic devotions by arriving on the waves? Truly, it is a bit of a toss-up, and it is pretty easy to imagine that Jolly Old Elf flying high with Cupid and Donner or rocking a really sweet Woodie wagon. But Kris Kringle and Capitola go way back, and when the legendary merrymaker arrives a few weeks ahead of Christmas he shows up in an outrigger canoe, with a surfboard at the ready. That will all happen in 2017 on...

THE FINAL SATURDAY IN NOVEMBER, so that'll be Nov. 25. Be there for his shore-sweet, noontime arrival, and then hang out for a bit should your tots want to chat with him about gifts and wishes and cake and such. No admission necessary — it's free, hooray — and the Capitola-Soquel Chamber of Commerce is the organizer for the noon to 3 o'clock treat. And stay tuned, if you prefer your H2O to be rather frostier than the ocean, for an outdoor ice rink is headed for Capitola Village from Dec. 15 through Jan. 7, 2018. Could you surf in the morning and pirouette in the afternoon? You could, yes. It would be a day of communing with water in its various forms, which might make for some deep contemplation while you're out circling the rink or hanging ten on your best board.
