100% TRUTH: If someone were to press us on a particular topic -- that topic being "are you always a little bit in Cambria in your own mind?" -- we'd have to say yes. A resounding yes, of course, because being in Cambria is a goal we should all have; that is, if we like a Cambrian pace, a devotion to art, a solid quality of life, and wide stretches of gorgeous beachery. And wine, too, of course. Why wouldn't we daydream about being in the town that calls Nitt Witt Ridge its own?
BUT... things ramp up in the easy-breezy locale come fall, at least a little. It's harvest time at the region's wineries, yes, but other haps are afoot. Hearst Castle's Evening Tours start back up, running from Oct. 1 through Dec. 31 on Fridays and Saturdays. These are the "living history" walkabouts where people dress up in their twenties finery and tell you a bit about La Vida Enchanted Hill. Indeed, this is in San Simeon, but San Simeon is just a pop over from Cambria, in California terms.
THERE'S ALSO... Cambria's month-long scarecrow festival. Sweetness. Hundreds -- yes, hundreds -- of creative figures dot the town, some traditional, some truly funky in that Cambria-cool way. This is a place with art at heart, so you'll see whimsy run rampant. Oct. 1-31.
STAYING OVER: Pacifica Hotels are going the 15% off route in celebration of the scarecrow fest, but you have to make an advance booking (Cambria hotels include Fireside Inn, The Fog Catcher, Pelican Inn & Suites, and Cambria Landing). Or stay at the Blue Dolphin Inn, part of the Cambria Inns, and take in a bit of Paso Robles wine country in the thick of harvest season. There's a Coastal Wine Package on through the close of October.
