Fantastical Fall Figures to Charm in Cambria

Scarecrows will return to dot the delightful village.

TELL YOUR COWORKERS... or your neighbors or your relatives that you're going on a trip "to see some old pals," and they might assume you'll be visiting with someone you knew back at school. But if you're calling upon quaint Cambria during the month of October, chances are solid that those "old pals" will be stuffed with straw, and sporting lopsided hats, and maybe even breathing fake fire, if they happen to be dragons. For the scarecrows that return to Cambria each autumn, return in profusion, have become a sentimental sight for many Golden Staters, the sort of travelers looking for a touch of whimsy and nostalgia and creativity with a weekend away in a shore-close destination. One of the best things of all? The figures are free to view, so this isn't a queue-up, present-a-ticket kind of to-do. And the 2018 happening is all queued up to go, in just a handful of weeks, so best book your nook-for-a-night for the...

CAMBRIA SCARECROW FESTIVAL: The event, "Where Whimsy Runs Rampant," will take place from Oct. 1 through 31, "... with hundreds of scarecrows bowling, bathing, painting, pedaling, fishing, and flying over Cambria, San Simeon, and Harmony." This beloved festival is a decade along now, and count on plenty of fall fans showing up to snap photographs aplenty in front of shops, restaurants, and beyond. Who creates this adorable wonders? So many people around the area, from business owners to students. And if you're an Oktoberfest aficionado, be sure to be around town on Oct. 20, 2018, when brews and brats shall reign at the Cambria Vets Hall.
