In Marin: The American Indian Art Show

The venerable gathering will feature jewelry, textiles, more.

ART GATHERINGS... that brim with history and story and cultural significance don't come around every day, or even every month, but the West Coast is home to some important entries. One of the most esteemed happenings takes place in Marin each winter, and is set to unfold again with some 150 dealers displaying their elegant wares at the Marin Center Exhibit Hall. It's the 32nd Annual American Indian Art Show -- Marin, formerly known as Marin Show: Art of the Americas, and fans of textiles and paintings and more are making a date to be there on Saturday, Feb. 20 and Sunday, Feb. 21.

THE SHOW... not only features beautiful artworks from dozens of artists, but it is also partnering with the San Francisco Tribal & Textile Arts Show, meaning both events will happen concurrently in the same place. For collectors of pottery, baskets, necklaces, and more, and first-time buyers, and those who simply wish to see the exceptional pieces in person, it is a weekend extravaganza for the eye and mind. The mind part of the equation comes from learning about where the pieces hailed from, the techniques of the artist or craftsperson, and the importance of any design or stone found within. The event "has been regarded as one of the nation's most highly rated showcases of antique and contemporary American Indian Art," so this is the place to get to know what is happening now on the scene, and also to learn more about a particular discipline, such as beadwork. Photography, books, and more are part of the extensive displays.

THE BENEFICIARY: MarinLink, an organization that "serves as an incubator and fiscal sponsor to groups whose projects range from homeless services, community gardens, health and transportation initiatives, environmental education, veterans organizations, and art programs" is the beneficiary of the weekend's opening night welcome on Friday, Feb. 19.
