OCTOBER HAS 31 DAYS, and adding "no spoiler required" to that is, well, not required. And while that particular fact shouldn't shake anyone to their core, the fact that a large swath of high-profile attractions, hotels, and restaurants give notable discounts and freebies during one of the longer months of the year just might make a person, well, a little shook, in the best sense of the word. And that large swath of great spots? It does exist, in San Diego, which celebrates "Kids Free in October" Month, each and every year. Nope, this isn't a one-week-only kind of deal, or just on every Thursday or Monday; you can score nifty savings throughout the month, depending upon your destination.

AND THOSE DESTINATIONS INCLUDE... major places and perks, like free kid admission to San Diego Zoo Safari Park, free kid admission to the USS Midway Museum, and, you guessed it, free kid admission to the California Surf Museum. Some of the places that your child will receive a complimentary meal? Hilton San Diego Airport — Harbor Island, Doubletree San Diego Downtown, and Casa Guadalajara (definitely read the asterisks and must-dos and must-knows to obtain that complimentary cuisine for your kid, yup). Other notable venues on the lengthy, lengthy list of participants? The Living Coast Discovery Center, Belmont Park, and the San Diego Museum of Natural History.

VISITING "AMERICA'S FINEST CITY"... in the fall? It's a grand idea, given the generally grand weather and the all-year-long grand-a-tude of San Diego. But making it all even grander? The fact that over 100 spots around the region want to give families solid deals and pay-nothing opportunities during one of the calendar's stretch-out-iest months. Line up your one- or two-day getaway to San Diego, now, while October is mellow and the kids want to go, go, go.
