Sierra Sparkle: Mammoth Mountain's Night of Lights

The holidaytime tradition is a chilly, after-dark spectacle full of glow and goings-on.

THE SLOPES OF MAMMOTH? By day, by night, with snow, and without, they're there, in the way that majestic peak-laden locations have a way of staying put. And while they are known to hum in the daytime, especially if a big storm has dumped a whole bunch of flakeage, nighttime can grow rather quieter in the upper reaches of the resort. There's a big asterisk next to that assertion, however, and if you'd like to picture the asterisk as a glittery star, like a holiday star, well, sure, that's cool (after all, an asterisk famously rocks a star-like shape). For come one special Saturday in December, Mammoth Mountain stirs up a post-sundown party of yuletidean proportions, one that goes by the holiday handle...

NIGHT OF LIGHTS: And it is back, to shimmer and shine, on Saturday, Dec. 15. Point one, before we move on to the fact that lights and snow and nighttime make for a rather spectacular grouping? This is all free, so if you're vacationing in the Sierra town, over that middle December weekend. The torchlight parade is the headliner, for many spectators, as are the fireworks, but count on hearing live tunes and finding activities for the younger set.

CANYON LODGE... is the hub, start time is 5 p.m. (but, given its popularity, do arrive a bit early), and, for sure, Woolly will be around for photo opps (as will Woolly's buddy, Santa Claus). For the whole ice-tinerary, we mean iitinerary, of course, schuss to the online Night of Lights headquarters now, Mammoth peeps.
