Winter Dazzle: Saturday Fireworks at Squaw Valley

The above-the-slopes sky show isn't just for New Year's Eve.

THE EVENING AFTER A DAY ON THE SLOPES? Those precious hours can involve a number of different happy pastimes. Some aprés-ski fun, at the nearest resort, is a popular option, and whether that involves a nicely chilled ale, or a cheeseburger with all of the fixings, or an intimate concert, or all three, is up to the aprés-skier. Of course, an early night after a long and enjoyable day in the cold air might be the ticket. You might want to cuddle under some blankets while taking in a movie, or just turn in early, the better to start over and do it all again in the morning, if you're lucky enough to be on the mountain for longer than a day. But sometimes, the destination you're at is eager to do it up a bit more, and extend that celebratory spirit of the daytime right into the evening hours, even though the lifts are taking a snooze and the boards have been stowed. One place that's embraces that notion is...

SQUAW VALLEY | ALPINE MEADOWS, which stages an above-the-snow sky show every Saturday in winter. Actually, make that every Saturday in winter plus two Saturdays in very early spring, for the fireworks are shimmering each Saturday evening through to March 31, 2018 (weather permitting, of course of course). So where's a solid spot in the area from which to perch and spy the nighttime dazzle? "Plaza Bar will be open with a complimentary hot cocoa bar for kids and full food and beverage menu for the whole family" is the good word on the event page. Everything goes glittery at the Tahoe-famous destination around 6 o'clock, though the eats and sips begin earlier in the late afternoon. And that not-late start time also means you can move onto your next aprés-ski pursuit, whether that involves music, a movie, or turning in early, all to get a up-and-at-'em run at the slopes on Sunday morning.
