Young Bicyclist Died On Wednesday after Being Injured in Car Collision

A 12-year-old bicyclist who suffered major injuries in a collision with a car in Sunnyvale on Monday night died on Wednesday, a public safety official said on Thursday.

The boy, a Sunnyvale resident, rode his bicycle north at El Camino Real and Henderson Avenue shortly before 10 p.m. Monday when he was struck by a westbound car, public safety Capt. Jeffrey Plecque said.

An investigation indicated that the boy was not wearing a helmet when he crossed the intersection against a red light and was struck by the vehicle, Plecque said.

The boy was transported by ambulance to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead on Wednesday morning, Plecque said.

The driver of the car stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, according to Plecque.

Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factor in the collision, he said.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call public safety investigator Steve Cronin at (408) 730-7109.
