Homestead Man Accused of Killing Niece He Was Having Affair With: Police

Stephen Myers, 44, is married to the aunt of 21-year-old Winnie Mendoza

A Homestead man is being accused of shooting and killing his niece with whom he was having a secret sexual affair, police said.

Officers responded to a call of shots fired at around 8:30 a.m. Friday in the 15000 block of SW 307th Street and found Winnie Mendoza's body lying in the driveway in front of her home, according to Miami-Dade police.

Stephen Myers, 44, is married to the aunt of 21-year-old Mendoza, according to police. They had been in a secret sexual affair for the past two years.

The shooting happened after Myers followed the victim home at around 8 a.m. He exited his truck with a firearm and got into a fight with her, demanding to know who she had been with the entire night, police said in an arrest form.

During the argument, Myers shot the victim multiple times and fled the scene. He then drove home to his wife, and told her he had shot her niece, police said.

Myers fled from his home but was later found and arrested. He is facing a charge of second-degree murder and was booked into jail under no bond.

Family members say Mendoza worked as a pharmacist assistant. Her 22nd birthday is next month.

"She worked. She didn't have any bad habits," Mendoza's aunt told NBC 6 in Spanish. "All she did was work."
