A 6-year-old girl found a loaded handgun in her apartment in Clairemont, California, and accidentally shot herself in the leg Saturday afternoon officials said.
The incident happened in the 3800 block of Caminito Aguilar at approximately 3:15 p.m.
Both of the girl's parents were home at the time as well as two other siblings, a seven and three-year-old.
"Whenever you have a firearm… especially with a young child it’s always of good concern," Sgt. Phillip Worthington said of the incident.
The girl's parents called 911 and drove her to the fire station on Chateau Drive where medics met them. She has been taken to Rady Children's Hospital.
It's unclear who the gun is registered to or where exactly she found it.
No one has been been arrested, but officials say the investigation is ongoing.
