The puppy that was found abandoned with its paws frozen to the ground in a New York City park left an animal hospital Thursday, less than a week after it was discovered near death chained to a tree.
Bindi, a pit bull-lab mix, wagged her tail and was playful as she left a Brooklyn animal hospital at about noon. It was less than a week after she was rescued, but her mood was a far cry from when she was found freezing and neglected in Prospect Park, glued to ground frozen by temperatures in the teens.
The dog was rescued Jennifer Williams on Friday morning after her dog broke free of it harness and ran toward Bindi. When Williams caught up she saw the neglected animal, unable to move.
She said she gingerly lifted Bindi, and discovered blood from the dog's paws on her coat. She called Sean Casey Animal Rescue, which took the dog in. The rescue and Pet Haven have been caring for the dog since, and the Veterinary Emergency and Referral Group has been administering medical treatment.
The Sean Casey Animal Rescue said that after Bindi was taken in, she began vomiting rubber and had blood in her urine. Vets did tests and X-rays, finding the animal was very anemic and had shards of metal in her stomach.
Vets performed several procedures on Bindi, removing the shards and giving her multiple blood transfusions. It wasn't long before her condition, mood and once-bloodied paw pads improved noticeably.
Vets and rescuers said Thursday that she isn't out of the woods yet, though. Her blood is continuing to be monitored and she will soon be treated for a stomach ulcer, the Sean Casey Animal Rescue says. And there is a growth on her left eye that will also need to be removed.
