Police: 16-Month-Old Survives Attempted Hanging at Minneapolis Day Care

The boy was transported to a local hospital and is "doing fine," Assistant Police Chief Kris Arneson says

Police say a woman tried to hang a 16-month-old boy at a Minneapolis day care then threatened to jump from a freeway overpass.

Assistant Police Chief Kris Arneson says officers responded to reports that a woman "intentionally" hanged the boy inside a day care in the city's south side. A parent who arrived at the day care to drop off their child rescued the toddler, NBC affiliate KARE reported.

Arneson said the boy was transported to a local hospital and is "doing fine."

The woman fled in a van, ran over a pedestrian and struck a bicyclist. Arneson says the pedestrian suffered broken bones and abrasions, and the bicyclist is in critical condition, KARE reported. Both victims are expected to survive, Arneson said.

The woman drove to the Park Avenue overpass above Interstate 94, hitting several vehicles, before threatening to jump off the bridge.

Passers-by tackled the woman and restrained her until police arrived. The woman was taken to a local hospital and remained under police custody.

Authorities have not released the woman's name, but Arneson says the operator of the day care is the suspect.

According to the Star Tribune, the home is approved to care for up to 12 children. Arneson said fewer than six children were in the home at the time of the incident.

The Tribune reports that police don't know a motive.
