Construction Firm Offers to Demolish Newtown Shooter's Home for Free

A construction company with ties to Newtown has offered to demolish the home of the Sandy Hook school shooter at no cost, according to Newtown's first selectwoman.

First Selectwoman Pat Llodra said Manafort Brothers agreed to demolish the former home of Adam Lanza, at 36 Yogananda Street, as a way to honor the 26 students and school staff members killed in the mass shooting.

The company employs several Newtown residents and company representatives approached town officials with the offer about a month ago, Llodra said.

On Tuesday night, the plan was approved during a special town meeting and Llodra will meet with Manafort today.

No timetable has yet been set on the demolition, which is in the early planning stages, she said.

Adam Lanza shared the Yogananda Street home with his mother, Nancy Lanza, and killed her on Dec. 14, 2012, before heading to Sandy Hook Elementary School where he fatally shot 20 students and six educators, then committed suicide.

In December, the town acquired the property. A month later, the Newtown Legislative Council voted to tear it down.

Manafort's offer would save about $30,000 that Newtown planned to spend with money from an insurance fund set aside for costs associated with the shootings, the News-Times reports. The fund was used to demolish the Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2013.
