Officials: No Cause of Death for Man Who Died in Police Custody

An autopsy Tuesday did not determine the cause of death for a man who died in Chicago police custody Monday.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said the cause of death was still pending following an autopsy of 24-year-old Heriberto Godinez Jr.

Godinez Jr. died Monday while in police custody as officers investigated a possible burglary.

Officers said they were called to the scene of a potential burglary around 1:30 a.m. in the 3000 block of West Pershing. A man suspected of being involved in the burglary was “sweating heavily with labored breathing," according to authorities.

Paramedics were called but, despite medical help, the man became unresponsive.

Further details surrounding his death were not immediately clear.

Area Central detectives are investigating.
