Dubai Investigates Luxury Hotel Skyscraper Fire Near Burj Khalifa

Burning debris rained down from the building as firetrucks raced to the scene.

Officials began investigating the massive fire that ripped through a luxury hotel in Dubai on New Year’s Eve, NBC News reported.

Fourteen people were injured in the fire at the Address Downtown Dubai hotel, about 600 yards away from the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa.

The blaze started at the 20th floor and spread up the side of the building. The Associated Press reported firefighters were watching the fire from the ground about 12 hours after it broke out, and began spraying the building after regaining water pressure.

Officials said the fire didn’t spread inside the building, but it did raise questions about the safety of the emirate’s tall buildings. Thursday’s fire was latest of several to hit the city’s skyscrapers in recent years.
