Crews Investigating Cause of Fatal 5-Alarm Fire

Fire broke out at 104 Winthrop Street in Roxbury

Crews looked through the charred remains of an apartment building in Boston's Roxbury neighborhood Saturday, the site of a five-alarm fire that killed a man Friday night.

Flames tore through the three-story, six-family home on Winthrop Street, beginning around 9:30 p.m. A man in his 40s is dead, and 30 others are without a place to live.

"What are we going to do?" asked Juan Diaz, who evacuated. "It was lucky nobody else was hurt."

The district attorney's office is looking into the cause of death. Officials have not ruled anything out, including criminal activity.

One woman who lives in the building was injured and taken to a nearby hospital. In addition, one firefighter was transported from the scene for further evaluation of a heart condition.

Crews worked underground to shut off power to the home Saturday. City inspectors were boarding up the building Saturday. The American Red Cross of Massachusetts put up the evacuated residents in nearby hotels.

"The fire department itself did a great job," said neighbor Linda Packard.

The damage estimated to be over $1 million.

"I cant even imagine how it could have started," said neighbor Sunni Dai Pankey. "It was so intense. I've seen anything like that."

"The investigators have some ideas, but for right now, it's still under investigation," said Steve MacDonald of Boston Fire.
