Spring Storm to Drop Up to 4 Inches of Snow on Tri-State

Sunday might mark the start of spring, but Storm Team 4 says you might not want to pack up the winter clothes just yet.

A wintry coastal storm could dump as much as 4 inches of snow on parts of the tri-state Sunday, according to Storm Team 4. Other parts of the region, including New York City, will see lower snow totals as flakes mix with rain.

Snow will start falling in central and southern New Jersey at about 6 a.m. By noon, flakes could be falling across the tri-state. Flakes will continue to fall throughout the evening and Storm Team 4 says the storm will move out of the region before the Monday morning rush.

Snow could mix with rain in areas closer to the coasts, pushing snow totals lower. Surfaces kept warm by the warmer-than-average temperatures observed across the region will also help keep too much of the white stuff from sticking until well into the storm.

Long Island could see the brunt of the wintry weather, with Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties seeing between 2 and 4 inches of powder. parts of the south fork of the Island could see as much as 6 inches.

New York City, the Hudson Valley and New Jersey should see between a dusting and 2 inches, but parts of the shore could also see totals in the 2-to-4 inch range, Storm Team 4 says.

Mayor de Blasio has issued a travel advisory in New York City Sunday night, asking drivers to prepare for slippery roads and allow for extra travel time. The Department of Sanitation says it's still in snow season, which ends around the middle of April, and has its salt spreaders, plows and salt ready.

The department deploys salt spreaders at the first trace of snow, and its plows once accumulation reaches two inches.

Until the storm moves in, Storm Team 4 says it'll be dry but a wintry feel will start to settle over the region.

Winds began kicking up Friday afternoon, and won't climb out of the 50s. Saturday will be chillier, with temperatures in the 40s and it'll be comparatively frigid -- in the 30s -- by the time the snow starts to fall on Sunday.

The silver lining to the wintry weather is that the white stuff won't stick around for long.

Temperatures will rebound as soon as the storm moves out, with highs Monday inching back into the mid 40s. By Thursday, the tri-state could see the mercury back up in the upper 60s.
