Food Network Names Chicago Burger as Best in America

Au Cheval's Double Cheese Burger was praised for its "perfect burger-to-cheese ratio"

Just in time for the Fourth of July and prime grilling season, the Food Network has named a burger from a Chicago restaurant as the best in the country.

The Double Cheese Burger from Au Cheval on the Near West Side clinched the top spot on the Food Network's "Top 5 Restaurants" show, hosted by Geoffrey Zakarian and Sunny Anderson.

The burger, made with three patties and topped with cheddar, maple-glazed bacon and homemade "Dijonnaise" with the option of adding a fried egg, was praised for its "perfect burger-to-cheese ratio." In 2012, Bon Appetit magazine also named the famed cheeseburger the best in America.

Long wait lines are now common to get into Au Cheval, mostly for the Double Cheese Burger. According to Eater Chicago, the cooks can make up to 500 of them a day on the weekend.

The top 5 list was rounded out by the Steakhouse Burger from Brindle Room in New York; the Classic Burger from Pie 'n Burger in Pasadena, Calif.; the Onion Burger from Sid's Diner in El Reno, Okla.; and the Mission Burger from Mission Bowling Club in San Francisco.
