‘Frostbite Within A Minute': Deep Freeze Grips Alaska

It may be mid-November, but residents of Alaska are already feeling the extreme chill of winter. On Monday, temperatures around the state dropped as low as 24 below zero.

“With these sorts of temperatures, people are at risk of frostbite within a minute of stepping outside, if not less than that,” said Kevin Roth, lead meteorologist at The Weather Channel. “With this kind of cold, you walk outside and it really takes your breath away if you’re not used to it,” he added, warning that any exposed skin poses a risk.

The frostbite-inducing temperature was 20 degrees below average and is not expected to rise above zero until Thursday.
