Rudy Giuliani is leaving his Manhattan law firm to focus solely on his new role on President Donald Trump's legal team.
The former New York City mayor originally planned simply to take a leave of absence from the law firm of GreenbergTraurig when he joined Trump's outside team last month, telling NBC News that he initially thought it would be "part-time and quick."
But the law firm released a statement Thursday announcing that the parting would be permanent after Giuliani recognized his work for Trump "is all consuming and is lasting longer than initially anticipated."
Giuliani said that he was stepping away "in light of the pressing demands of the Mueller investigation" into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
The ex-mayor said that his "sole concentration can be on this critically important matter for our country."
"You can't just jump in and jump out," he told NBC News, adding that leaving the firm was a "mutual decision."
