Homeowner Fatally Shoots Autistic Man Entering His Residence

An Austin homeowner has fatally shot an autistic man who was forcing his way into the residence after running away from the nearby group home where he lived.

Police say the homeowner told investigators he feared for the safety of his family, which includes three children, when he went to the door early Monday morning and shot the man trying to gain access. No charges have been filed.

Nel Taylor, a spokesperson for ResCare, which provides services at an area group home, said the autistic man had become agitated and ran away. A staff member tried to follow him, but couldn't convince him to return.

Police say they received multiple calls that the suspect was banging on doors in the neighborhood before trying to enter the home.
