Humpback Whales Slow to Arrive in Hawaii

Experts say humpback whales have been slow to return to Hawaii in December, a time when whale season starts in Hawaii, NBC News reported.

More than 10,000 whales journey from Alaska to Hawaii to make and give birth each year. But experts say the absence could mean they’re spending more time feeding in northern waters.

Lyman said the whales could also be facing disruptions from El Nino or competition for food because of increased whale populations.

"This isn't a concern, but it's of interest. One theory was that something like this happened as whales increased. It's a product of their success," said Ed Lyman, a Maui-based resource protection manager and response coordinator for the sanctuary.
