‘ISIS'-Shouting Suspects Sought in Bronx Beating

Detectives with the NYPD Hate Crime Task Force continued on Sunday to search for two suspects who shouted "ISIS, ISIS" as they attacked and beat a man walking his niece home from school.

The attackers apparently targeted 43-year-old Mujibur Rahman because he was dressed in a salwar, a traditional garment worn by men and women in India and South Asia.

Rahman and his 7-year-old niece were walking in front of Junior High School 125 Henry Hudson at about 5:30 p.m. Friday when the attack occurred, police said.

The assailants, shouting "ISIS, ISIS," punched the victim several times in the head and kicked him after he fell to the ground, police said.

Rahman was taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where he was treated and released. His niece wasn't physically harmed, police said.

State Assemblyman Luis Sepulveda and state Senator Ruben Diaz Sr. on Sunday called for residents to join them Tuesday for a rally against hate crimes.

“I am appalled by this latest hate crime in the heart of our community,” Sepulveda said.

The rally is planned for 9 a.m. in front of PS 119 on Pugsley Avenue, where the attack on Rahman occurred.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS.
