Iranians Burn Flags, Effigies to Mark Anniversary of Tehran's U.S. Embassy Takeover

Thousands gathered to mark the anniversary of the 1979 takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, NBC News reported.

Crowds chanted anti-U.S. slogans, and burned American flags and effigies of President Barack Obama on Wednesday.

"We are here to say, 'down with the USA,'" a 59-year-old teacher who gave his name as Abdolah said on Wednesday. "We will never let the embassy open again. It was never an embassy, it was a place for spies."

Students took dozens of hostages when they stormed the embassy on Nov. 4, 1979, holding them for more than 400 days. The crisis caused the U.S. to sever ties with Iran.
