Judge's Tough Love Talk to Minors Goes Viral: ‘You Are Special'

A judge tells a group of at-risk youths there is no excuse for a life of crime

A video recording of a Georgia judge who stood before a group of minors pleading with them to change their destructive ways has touched a nerve. Bibb County Superior Court Judge Verda Colvin looked directly at the girls and boys in court and said, "You are special."

The nine-minute recorded speech was given as part of the "Consider the Consequences" class at the Bibb County Sheriff's Office.

"Consider me your surrogate mom. Don't you come up in here... get yourselves together. Stop this. Why do you want to be another statistic?" Colvin warned as she paced in front of the children.

The judge displayed a body bag seeking to scare the children straight and encourage them to avoid becoming a statistic. Colvin did not know she was being recorded as she spoke from the heart and shared her own family experience of raising a son in a single-parent home.

Tissues were passed as Colvin brought some of the children to tears, according to the Bibb County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, where the video was posted.

"When I see you all hurting it makes me hurt too," Colvin said.

The judge's motivating words have had an impact on Facebook, where it was shared nearly 6,000 times. Watch the video in its entirety here
