A Long Island homeowner said he “thought it was a tractor-trailer” when a stolen Volkswagen flew through the air and crashed upside down in his front yard overnight.
Andrew Spadafora said he was startled awake at about 1:30 a.m. on Friday when he heard the out-of-control car hurtle through the air before destroying his fence and crashing on the lawn of his home on Kime Avenue in North Babylon.
When he went to see what the commotion was, he said he was stunned to see the crashed – and empty – car sitting in the yard steps away from his house.
"If he came through the garage we would have had a nightmare," he said.
"With all the electric there could have been some kind of explosion."
Spadafora said he later checked surveillance cameras he installed to catch thieves and saw the driver sprinting away from the scene.
"I don’t know how he got out and ran away," Spadafora said.
Police said the car was reported stolen from East Islip recently. It’s not clear what caused the driver to lose control of the stolen vehicle.

Authorities also said that the driver dropped two cellphones in his haste to leave the crash site.
