Man Steals Package From Police Station While Waiting to Re-Register as Sex Offender: Police

Surveillance video from a police station shows a man waiting to re-register as a sex offender steal a package that had just been delivered, Anne Arundel County Police said.

The package was delivered to the lobby of the western district station in Odenton, Maryland, Thursday, but didn't make it to its intended recipient. The delivery service confirmed Friday the packaged had been delivered, and police checked surveillance video.

The video shows a delivery driver place a package against a lobby door leading to an area restricted to authorized personnel, police said.

Also captured on the video, 53-year-old Michael Joseph Leonard of Crofton, who was waiting in the lobby to renew his sex offender registration, snaps up the package, sits down again for more than 30 secounds, then gets up again and walks out to his car, police said.

He returned without the package and was processed for the sex offender registry, police said.

Because he was registered, police knew where Leonard lived. Officers went to his Crofton home, where they found the package in a vehicle, police said.

The package was returned to its owner.

Leonard was arrested Monday and charged with theft.
